I like to always be prepared and part of that is to carry a useful pocket knife that can be used to carry out most everyday tasks that I may need it too, without weighing down my pocket. I have a Leatherman Surge Tool but although a very useful and a well made tool, it weighs far too much for comfortable every day carry (EDC).
The Swiss Army model 1961 fits the bill perfectly though. This pocket knife has 7 useful and strong tools, a blade, a reamer, a blade combining bottle opener, screwdriver, and wire stripper, and a combined can-opener and small screwdriver and it weighs 72 g (2.5 oz).
As the name suggests it was originally issued to Swiss Armed Forces in 1961 and continued to be issued until 2008 when it was replaced by the Soldier Knife 08. The knife is one of the Alox variety of Swiss army knives which has a silver knurled handle instead of the usual red plastic and the blades are slightly thicker and stronger. It’s designed for the hard work that being in the field is bound to bring it’s way.
My knife has been manufactured by Wenger but versions are also made by Victorinox.
This knife is also legal to carry in the UK in that it’s blade is under 3 inches long and is non locking.
I can highly recommend this knife as a useful, lightweight, strong pocket tool that you can carry all the time. As they say, the most useful tool is the one you have with you…..
